Look Outside: Don’t Open the Curtains

A spoiler-light look at Look Outside, a survival horror RPG where your apartment becomes a refuge from something terrible beyond the windows

On this page

A spoiler-light editorial introduction, not a scored or firsthand review. A window is supposed to make a small apartment feel less claustrophobic. It gives you daylight, a view, proof that there is something beyond your own four walls. Look Outside takes that ordinary comfort and makes it the thing you should be afraid of.

It is a wonderfully unpleasant starting point for a horror story. You do not need to enter an abandoned hospital or accept a suspicious invitation. You are already home.

Something outside is changing people

Developed by Francis Coulombe and published by Devolver Digital, Look Outside is a survival horror RPG set in an apartment building. An unexplained phenomenon transforms people who look outside into grotesque creatures. Staying away from the window is only the beginning: the building itself has become dangerous. Official game overview.

Spoiler boundary: this introduction covers the setup and basic systems. The explanation for the phenomenon, individual encounters, and endings are left for you to discover.

You still have to live here

The developer’s original pitch pairs monstrous neighbours with household routines: managing weapons and ammunition, cooking, crafting, and even playing video games. That contrast is the hook. A kitchen is still a kitchen, even when the corridor outside it has stopped making sense. Developer’s original game page.

The full game combines scavenging with turn-based combat that takes distance into account. Between expeditions, your apartment provides a place to recover, make things, and spend time with allies. Some characters can be recruited or offered shelter, and the story has multiple endings. Gameplay details.

That gives the premise somewhere to go beyond a single scary image. Food, company, and a room to return to become reasons to care about a place you might otherwise want to escape.

The horror is uncomfortably close to home

There is something especially nasty about putting the unknown within earshot. A distant catastrophe can stay abstract. A neighbour on the other side of a door cannot. The apartment setting makes the central idea personal: what happens when familiar surroundings stop being reassuring?

That is the appeal here for anyone drawn to strange, intimate horror. The question is not simply what is happening outside. It is how much ordinary life can survive around it.

Before you play: the game includes body horror, frequent violence, and gore. Its pixel-art presentation does not make it gentle. Developer content notice.

If the premise has you curious, resist reading an explanation of every creature before you begin. A closed door is more interesting when you do not already know what is behind it.
